I noticed the local big box store had a big display of blue windshield washer fluid for cheap. I was about to load up for winter and noticed it said +32 formula. Here in the upper Midwest it is likely we will see freezing nights beginning in the next few weeks.

I passed in the “deal” but remembered I had a jug or two in the garage and thought I better check them out. Sure enough, I had summer fluid. I don’t really ever remember seeing summer washer fluid except those specialty bug washer or rain-x stuff, not the basic blue. So double check your fluid the next time you buy if you are in a cold climate. Nothing is worse than frozen washer fluid when you have salt accumulating on the windshield.

That cheap dollar store summer shit is basically just water

better to spend the $2 on real washer fluid

Here’s a picture I took a couple years ago while riding shotgun in a company truck:

It looks like someone thought to bring a backup washer fluid option and that froze too. That sucks.

The sprayer circuit had failed; only the wipers worked. Instead of fixing it, my boss instructed me to pick up a bottle of glass cleaner from Home Depot and lean out the window to spray it every once in a while.

I didn’t even think to bring the bottle inside overnight. That’s why it’s sitting on the defroster vent.

I thought that was a feature in Ford E-Series?

I won’t even buy the 32 degree stuff here in Texas. As you say, frozen fluid is so awful I don’t even want to worry about it for a few days below freezing.

Summer fluid in cold climates is just dumb. What if you don’t use enough of it by the time winter rolls around to lower the freezing point to a safe level? Suck the summer stuff out and throw money away? Nah. Just use winter stuff all the time.

Correction: the only thing worse is finding out that your washer fluid tank has cracked after all the fluid froze inside.

I haven’t used washer fluid on my windshield in 4 years. I buy -20 and mix a gallon of it with a gallon of pure methanol and pump it into my supercharger to keep it cool and boost my octane a little.
